Tyler with guest co-host Travis Irvine
Another reason of the Big Takeover means another appearance from my good buddy Travis. He always equals a good
time, whether he's on to promote his ultimately unsuccessful but rewarding campaign for Congress on the Libertarian ticket
in Ohio, or do a genuinely awful John Fogarty impression. We catch up and talk about our own comedy stories from the road
since last time around. Also on this episode, "Vanity Plates" a hilarious sketch featuring Evan Valentine
and Chris Brooks! This episode will blow your mind just as much, if not more, than that last one I said would blow your mind.

Season 6 / Episode 4: Tuesday,
June 14, 2011 "Everything is Right" Hosts
Tyler with guest co-host SM Shrake and guest Don Fleming (via phone) This week, our first live episode of the 2011 season, I welcomed
DC storytelling guru SM Shrake, who founded DC Story League and overseen it's blowin' up over the past year. He tells us a
couple of unbeleivable stories about the legendary Aretha Franklin, and reminds us of how special a place his home state of
Michigan truly is.

I was also lucky enough to get a chance to talk to Don Fleming, a many of many musical colors. Not only did Don make big
waves in the early 80's post-punk scene with his bands Velvey Monkeys and B.A.L.L., but he's also produced a veritable who's
who of 80's and 90's alt-rock bands, including Sonic Youth, Hole, and Teenage Fanclub. Also, Andrew W.(mf'n)K.! And guess
who took this photo immediately to the right over there? MIKE WATT (our guest on Episode 3). Wouldn't you believe it? I sure
don't.
Also on this episode, Tyler's stories from the road, and some top-secret audio that Alex K and I discovered
from a video game design board meeting in late 1985! You won't believe what the creative process was like back cocaine then.
I mean, back then. This episode will blow your mind. Playlist - manges

Season 6 / Episode 3: Monday, May
2, 2011 "Mike Watt and The Real World" Hosts
Tyler with guest Mike Watt When Minutemen singer/guitarist D. Boon died in 1985, bassist Mike
Watt nearly gave up music. Within a year or two, though, he started playing again, and as of today, is still touring the country
and inspiring millions with his tireless work ethic, ridiculous good nature, and musical invention that would make his late
best friend proud. When boiled down to it, I can’t think of a single rock bassist who is more influential, unless you
were to consider Flea (who readily admits that Watt is one of his biggest influences; RHCP could easily never have happened
if it weren’t for Minutemen).

Watt recently released his 4th solo album, Hyphenated-Man, on his own label (of course), clenchedwrench.
Until he began writing the music that became the new record on D. Boon’s old equipment (of course), he hadn’t
really revisited the music he made during the Minutemen era. Considering how prolific he’s been over the past couple
decades (look at the wiki page if you don’t believe me… he’s played with Sonic Youth, Porno for Pyros, the Stooges, and that’s
just for starters), it’s gratifying to see him let his musical career come full circle as he cruises through his “middle
years.” I caught up with him in the middle of his massive tour with his current band, The Missingmen. I could have talked
to this dude for weeks and still not heard all of the stories. But, hopefully this episode will do. Enjoy!

Season 6 / Episode 2: Monday, April
4, 2011 "Edwyn Collins" Hosts Tyler with
guests Edwyn Collins and Will Collins When Simon Reynolds wrote the definitive book on the post-punk movement (ca. 78-84) and why it may possibly have been the greatest, most inventive time in rock n’
roll history (period), he really didn’t have to go much farther for a title than the chorus line from Orange Juice’s
1982 hit, “Rip It Up and Start Again."
The man behind Orange Juice, Edwyn Collins, had been there from day 2 of punk, which may as well have been day zero as far as Glasgow was concerned. He started the
Nu-Sonics, which became Orange Juice in the late 70’s, and in direct contradiction to the clichés of punk rock
(Edwyn would spend the next 30+ years making beautiful art out of contradictions), they played funky, jangly, and completely
fucking classic pop songs that swirled in and out of the mainstream until 1994, when his solo single “A Girl Like You”
made him an international star.
In 2005, Edwyn suffered a massive stroke, which left him unable to walk, talk,
draw, or sing. In a feat of ridiculously inspirational strength, he learned to do all of those things again, despite having
little motor activity on the right side of his body. Amazingly, he’s released two albums of new material since the stroke,
and last year, Domino released an exhaustive 6-CD O.J. discography. Last month, Edwyn, now 51, along with his son Will (who also joined us in the interview) , his wife Grace Maxwell, made
their long-awaited return to the states. I sat down with Edwyn and Will moments before Ed and his band hit the stage for his
sold-out show at Brooklyn’s Rock Shop, his first US performance since before his stroke. Enjoy!!

Season 6 / Episode 1: Friday, March
18, 2011 "Harry Shearer's Blues" Hosts Tyler
with guest Harry Shearer Harry Shearer probably, moreso than any guest we've had on TBT, requires no introduction. He has been working in television and comedy
for almost 60 years now. His accomplishments are almost impossible to simplify, but perhaps his two most noteworthy include
starring/being Derek Smalls in Spinal Tap, and voicing upward of 17 characters on the Simpsons, including Mr. Burns, Smithers, Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner, and Otto Mann. Now, he's taken a serious turn with a new
documentary that uncovers what really happened leading up to the flooding of his beloved New Orleans in 2005.
Also, Jake and I recorded an intro to this episode in the world's most cluttered junk store in Bushwick, Brooklyn,
NY. Sorry for the lack of visuals. Playlist - derek smalls lead-in

assault on all of your good senses. Evan and I share our observations about Florida, the disastrous Spiderman musical, life
as 90's kids, and the holidays, and then City Limits stop through to talk more about the RagnaROCK show (Jan 14/15 at the
DC Arts Center) and a Champions collective show coming up soon in DC.

18, 2010 "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" Hosts
Tyler with guest Jeff Krulik and (briefly via phone) John Heyn Jeff Krulik has been making documentaries and doing freelance video work in the DC area for almost 30 years now. In 1986, he and fellow
AV dork John Heyn took some cameras to the parking lot at a Judas Priest concert and unintentionally made a cult classic mini-doc
that Dave Grohl called "rock n' roll 101." Heavy Metal Parking Lot, along with a number of other fun projects
he's embarked on, has made Krulik into a cult icon.

and a handful of EPs later (all praised by critics and dorks alike), they are still touring internationally, including an
appearance at the Matt Groening-curated All Tomorrow's Parties festivals.

Tyler with guest Paul Baribeau, Lewis Rogers, and Addison Rogers Paul Baribeau is a midwest-bred, transient folkster whose gained a ridiculous cult following all over the US with his brand of confessional
and just plain good songwriting.
Busman's Holiday is a folk/country/tin pan alley/whatever they want to play duo of brothers Lewis and Addy Rogers, born and bred in Bloomington.
We sat down on the porch of the Dollhouse in NW DC on this late summer night and talked Bloomington, why most music today

8, 2010 "The Road to Richmond" Hosts Tyler
with Chris Barylick and Mark T. Hrisho We recorded this while on the road to (and from) RVA for a show. Think
of it as more experimental. I decided to bet Chris and Mark that the Labor Day traffic coming back into DC would suck, while
they were skeptical. In the course of talking about traffic, we get into bizarre episodes from our past, Chris probably throws
in some small mammal references, and Mark swears a lot.
Split into 3 parts, the second and third parts bookend

sings it. I describe it for a bit and then play the song. Anyone with any idea, or who may know a resource I could go

Season 3, Episode 17: November 11,
2008 "America Episode IV: A New Hope" Hosts
Tyler and Jake with guests comedian Joe Devito, and the legendary Larry Poon. (Updated 10/15/10) It's funny writing this now, as the 2010 election approaches. We recorded this right after Barack
Obama won the election in 2008, and we were full of guarded enthusiasm about it. I had a nice chat with comedian Joe Devito
after a show we did at the Arlington Drafthouse, and Jake interviewed Larry Poon about Poonanza, a big annual show he did
with some of DC's top comics. This one is a great snapshot of two years ago. How time flies.
Season 3, Episode 16: October 18,
2008 "That Sound, Comin' Out of the Hole in the Wood" Hosts
Tyler with guest Joe Jack Talcum (on the phone). (Updated 10/18/10) Ever since hearing "Punk Rock Girl" for the first time one summer day when
Radio 104 decided to stop sucking for 5 minutes and play it, I've been a big Dead Milkmen fan. The group's founding guitarist Joe "Jack Talcum/Butterfly" Gerano has been very gracious in helping me with a number of TDC-related things, including a spiel I wrote on effectively blending
music and humor (which the Milkmen did masterfully). Here, he and I had a chat about his musical past with the Milkmen,
his many side projects and other things he's been doing since the band dissolved in the mid-90's. Right around the time we
did this interview, the Milkmen (save for late, great bassist Dave Blood) had begun playing shows again on occasion. Also,
Ted gave me another call to talk about The Residents. You know it.
Season 3, Episode 15: October 6,
2008 "NOLA State of Mind" Hosts Tyler with
guest Ted from New Orleans (on the phone). (Updated 10/15/10) I had a nice chat with my good friend (and TDC luminary) Ted about his adopted city
of New Orleans (which he has since had to leave, but misses every second). We had a long chat about how ridiculous VH1's attempt
at making the "Top 100 Hip-Hop Songs" list. Fun for what it is.
Season 3, Episode 14: September
22, 2008 "I Should Listen to your Podcast" Hosts
Tyler with guests Oppenheimer (Belfast), Hypernova (Iranian indie band), plus a special "Zach Blast!" sketch
from The Champions from the bowels of DC.
(Updated 10/15/10) Oppenheimer made 2 amazing electro-pop albums in their four-year span as a band. I caught them on their fourth(?) US tour to chat about
their indie rock pedigrees and their hometown in Northern Ireland. Also, London sucks if you're in a band. Hypernova are an indie band who sound a lot like Interpol. The cool thing is, they're all from Iran, but defected but are now based
in New York. I talked to a couple of the guys in the group on a whim one sunday night in the district. Quality was only ok
because I recorded them on a shitty microcassette and converted it. Still, a neat interview. The Champions are... nah,
you'll figure it out. You may not be ready.

Matthew's Vegas Fun-Time Stories

Playlist
See, I wrote down a chunk of it, but kind of lost track as the show got out of hand in the most beautiful way possible. This
included Matt from The Bureau's tale of coke whores in Vegas, about 14 "DAMMIT BARYLICK"s, and a crew of about 15 sixteen-year-olds
going crazy watching us outside of the studio. It was a fun night.
